Review: The Birthday Ball

Lowry, Lois. The Birthday Ball. New York: Houghton Mifflin, 2010. (Grades 3-6)

Young readers will be enchanted with Princess Patricia Priscilla, who is to become betrothed at her 16th birthday ball. But Patricia Priscilla is no docile darling to be auctioned to the highest bidder by her loving but clueless royal parents. Instead, she takes matters into her own hands to create a happy ending for all, winning the hearts of her villagers, gracefully avoiding proposals from the most odious suitors imaginable, reuniting a family, and finding true love in this delightful twist on traditional princess tales.

About kstreet245

I'm a teacher librarian with Norman Public Schools and adjunct instructor for children's literature at the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies. I've been married to Ken since 1975, and we have two wonderful children, both married. We have no grandchildren, but instead are "owned" by three dachshunds. We are active members of Country Estates Baptist Church in Midwest City, OK, teaching Sunday School, playing handbells, keyboards, and percussion, and singing in the choir. I enjoy reading, crafts, travel, and nice, long naps when I can work them in!
